The Covid-19 pandemic has spread across the world over the past 18 months, and scientists and medical professionals have been working day and night to unravel the secrets in the virus’ genetic code. While we still do not know everything there is to know about the virus, we know a great deal more than we did at the beginning of the pandemic, including the most common symptoms, possible complications arising from the infection, possible long-term complications and their effects on pre-existing medical conditions and much more.

The most common symptoms of Covid-19 include fever, dry cough, tiredness, body ache, sore throat, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, headaches, rashes, and a loss of sense of taste or smell.

However, a significant number of patients report that they continue to experience symptoms of the virus long after their initial recovery. The most common symptoms reported by such patients include:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Cough
  • Joint pain
  • Chest pain
  • Memory, concentration or sleep problems
  • Muscle pain or headache
  • Fast or pounding heartbeat
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Fever
  • Dizziness when you stand
  • Worsened symptoms after physical or mental activities

One of the most worrying aspects of the virus, however, is its ability to cause long term damage to various critical organs within the body, such as the heart, lungs and brain (regardless of whether or not any long-term symptoms developed from the infection). Imaging tests taken months after recovery have shown significant damage to the heart muscle in many cases, and exposure to the virus also increases the risk of strokes, seizures and temporary paralysis due to the damage it causes to the brain. Covid-19 also causes a type of pneumonia (which results in breathing difficulties) that causes long-term damage to the alveoli within one’s lungs, causing scar tissue which can lead to long-term breathing problems. Some people have also reported severe inflammation to other organs and tissues.

If you have contracted Covid-19, it is advisable to get a full checkup done in order to ensure that your body does not continue to deal with any of the damaging long-term effects. The earlier such damage is detected, the sooner the damage can be treated, restoring you to a state of peak wellness. If such damage is allowed to linger, the long-term health implications can be severely damaging.
