HEALTH FOCUS: REDUCE CORTISOL TO REDUCE “TOXIC” EXCESS FAT
Cortisol is a hormone that is released when you are stressed, causing your metabolism to slow and energy to rise preparing you for a fight or flight situation. Everyday stressors increase your cortisol and in the absence of a real fight or flight situation, excess cortisol alters your metabolism, often leading to food cravings and fat storage around the abdomen.

To reduce excess cortisol, that leads to weight gain and related medical conditions, do the following:

• Eat quality food with nutrients including wholegrains, lean protein, healthy fats, fruits & veggies

• Exercise moderately every day for 30 minutes or more including brisk walks and playing sports

• Schedule relaxation activities e.g. mindfulness meditation, yogic breathing, soft music and hobbies

• Check with your physician before taking medications or supplements

• Reduce added sugar and caffeine in your diet

• Sleep for 7 to 8 hours to rejuvenate your body.
